FALLOW STAG, oil on panel

Just finished in time to look back over 2024. I have started to compare Off-the-grid living to driving a 1966 Volkswagon Van... It just requires constant tinkering. And BOY have I ever tinkered on the land this year. New well pump, rebuilding inverters, expanded food growing, reworking solar panels, new batteries... Not as much time studio-painting, but lots of time land-creating.

So this one has been slow cooking as I have been creating: THE FALLOW STAG. It has been an apt point of meditation during a season when it seems like my creative studio has been allowed to “go fallow” while I put my energy elsewhere.

I WILL WAKE THE DAWN

Over the last year, I have had a lot of curiosity about the sculptures used to inspire my paintings.

Typically they are quire ephemeral, and rarely outlive the process of creating the painting. But there has been enough curatorial curiosity, I am reconsidering my process. This is my first exploration at making an archival paper golem.

I have a big project starting up in January (more to come on that later), and more of these archival sculptures curatorially interacting with the paintings are coming.

I am leaning fully into this new direction and can’t wait to see where it takes me!

This was one of my favorite paintings. I made it back in 2016 during a major transition in my studio...

Then the famed GREAT DISASTER OF 2019 occurred, in the painting was horrifically damaged.

The image never let go of me, and at last I'm going back to repaint it. Now with almost a decade of deeper studies in light and color. And I think I'm loving it even more!

3 years… I was about to post and suddenly realized I have been working on this piece for 3 YEARS!

Not all in one go mind you. It started as an ecorche’ exercise in clay, which sat in a corner for a spell, then caught a vision for a painting. Then the painting sat in a dusty corner as other projects demanded attention.

Now it’s done! And I can feel something shifted in me and the studio.

I think I will call it:

THE PAPER ARCHANGEL is done!

I posted a video of this piece Monday, and here is a still post of the commission for closer enjoyment. This was such a fun commission. The client wanted an archangel based on imagery of St Michael, but dictated that they did not want to see the painting in process, just an unveiling of the final piece over the holidays in their new home. And that every member of my family had to work on it.

The parameters of the commission really pushed my “A-Game” levels as a painter, but still gave my creative team and I loads of creative freedom.

One of our concerns: evil, darkness, and dark power are naturally fascinating. Goodness tends to be portrayed as soft, delicate, and rather boring (think of almost every Christmas angel) This time we wanted to make a fascinating, powerful good.

THE PAPER ARCHANGEL is done!

This was an incredible commission. The client wanted an archangel based on imagery of St Michael, but dictated that they did not want to see the painting in process, just an unveiling of the final piece over the holidays in their new home. And that every member of my family had to work on it.

As promised, the piece was unveiled two days after Christmas, so now I can show you all what I have been up to!

The collaboration with my family was a blast. I will be sharing the paper sculpture we used to inspire this piece later. I crafted the body. My son designed and constructed the armor. My daughter made the angelic spear, and my wife created the wings. Then loads of debate, discussion and critique all through the painting process.

In this season, it was good to meditate on a powerful good, a creature as fearsome as it was beautiful, instead of the darkness that can take center stage.

Between my bigger paintings, and especially when a bigger painting gets frustrating, I keep a regular practice of sketching out compositions. Sharpens my skills in structural anatomy, color composition, and creative vision.

Sometimes they come from modeling session outtakes with my golems. As in this case: a golem caught in a moment of transcendence.

They are typically a collector favorite. I do sell prints of my big pieces, but I love to share my original work with people.

I am knee deep in another commission. Wish like the last one is under strict regulations of secrecy... Damn it! It's freaking brilliant! I'll get to share it when it is unveiled to the patron.

In the meantime I just can't get enough of this dragon. The paintings big brother is up at the @natsoulasgallery right now. But in the meantime I can still play with a little brothers. I got plenty of shots of this glorious fellow on my land.
