Greetings to you, my long-time supporters, and my new art friends. It is time to close up another year, reflect, seek connection with loved ones, and anticipate the coming year. In the spirit of the season, I have some new works to share with you all.
This year, I often mused that living off-the-grid is not unlike driving my old 1966 Volkswagon Van… It just requires constant tinkering. And BOY have I ever tinkered on the land this year! Many of the original systems started failing, requiring inverter rebuilds, roof work, reworking solar panels (twice), new house batteries. There were also new ventures: a new well pump, expanded plots for food growing, our first successful chicken brooding… All great land work, but the painting studio was fallow.
Not ignored, fallowed. Meaning, the soil is plowed and tended… but no new crops are planted. Enabling toxic buildups and parasites to be cleaned away, and new nourishment to settle into the soil in anticipation of next season’s planting.
FALLOW STAG, oil on panel, 21″X11.5″
So I fallowed, allowing myself to play with old ideas in the studio, and work out some longstanding frustrations with my process.
The FALLOW STAG (above), just completed this week, explored an ancient visual tradition of the stag and the serpent in combat.
G_D TAKES KING (right), finished in the spring, was a play in light and color as I considered a conflict between a statue of Caesar against a living tree.
Between the longer paintings, I explored large format, quickly executed, oil-drawings on paper (see THE ACOLYTE below).
Fallowing, letting the skills settle. In anticipation of a new season.

As I have already shared with some of you, starting in January I am venturing to a new project. I am bringing back some of my old practices in narrative portraiture & collaborative creation, and fusing it with my current practice of the Golem. I am going to be looking deeper into the old story of The Tower of Babel. Im not fully certain what it will turn into, but I am in conversation with community groups, and seeking funding for something on a grand scale.
I will be sharing developments with you on the other side of the new year!
